The Connected Patient

Track Actual Experiences of Disease to Accelerate Treatment Breakthroughs

Wearable consumer gadgets that track one's physical activity already suggest a future when even more sophisticated mobile-centric technologies could improve individual care plans by unobtrusively monitoring critical aspects of one's health throughout the day; while also helping ambulatory patients to self-manage their conditions at home by discreetly collecting updates about one's vital signs in "real-world" settings, transmitting them to care providers for remote analysis.

Broader adoption of wearable biosensors promises to benefit medical domains that still rely on subjective observational skills to diagnose complex conditions: by tracking the progress of degenerative conditions when symptoms are difficult to reliably measure at sporadic doctor's office visits, or by continuously monitoring chronic conditions that need persistent supervision to well-manage one's symptoms.

And these devices should also extend research into the long-term outcomes of novel treatments by supplementing medical records even after patients leave the clinic — essentially, running a unique "trial" for each patient in a well-stratified cohort that better accounts for lifestyle influences.

BioArray

Digital Biomarker Panels

BioArray uses specially designed software to crunch through the torrents of data streaming from digital biosensors — machine learning algorithms that improve with experience at spotting clinically relevant patterns, "digital biomarkers," too faint to be easily recognized against a background of overwhelming noise.

The dynamic interplay among these signals is then woven into multifaceted panels that distill these readings into personal baselines of one's overall health and wellness. And when paired with one's medical history, can alert caregivers about potential health problems at their early stages, when many conditions are most treatable.
